History is often understood as merely events of the past, and it’s with this sentiment that we fail to understand how the past works in shaping the future. The making of Adelaide University, set to be established in 2026, showcases the importance of knowing where we are from in determining where we are going.

Laura Harris, a Kaurna woman, grew up with her mother at the Glanville waterfront. However, when she was fourteen, she was forced off the land by the Government as they built a sugar factory there in 1891.

Politics is often thought of as elections, boring old politicians arguing on TV, or more recently social media activism. Unless you are already interested in Politics, you might not know about South Australia’s interesting and sometimes rebellious political history. From women's rights to First Nations rights, South Australia's political story has been shaped by bold decisions, controversial leaders, and movements that changed not just the state, but history of Australia.

In 1984, the South Australian Constitution was amended through the strong efforts of South Australian suffragists to allow women to vote for and stand in South Australian Parliament, placing those in the state at the time as the “most enfranchised in the world”.

This month I wanted to take a quick look at the laws that granted rights to LGBTQ+ South Australians and the timeline of significant cultural events that have changed the lives of many in the local queer community, starting with the first major victory for gay rights 50 years ago.
