I was recently lucky enough to have a chat with Callum Barrott-Walsh, a young community advocate and political staffer, to find out how he got involved in the change-making space, what his future plans are, and to hear his advice for other young people within SA.

Do you want to meet like-minded young people? Do you have a passion for politics but don’t know where to start? Or maybe you’re super interested in International Relations (who isn’t, right??)! Well then you’re in luck, there are so many youth opportunities and programs to get involved in within SA - here are just a few of them.

Do you want to make a change in your community? Would you like to be involved in your Local Council and what programs they run/how young people’s views are represented? Well, then you’re in luck! Many Councils within SA have their own versions of a ‘Youth Advisory Committee’ (or YAC) that you can get involved with.

As humans, we never stop learning. There is always going to be something we don’t know, it’s just impossible to know everything. The phrase ‘You learn something new every day’, is especially true, but who are we learning things from?

“One bottle will have no impact.” Now visualise Earth’s population, instantaneously a critical number of seven billion bottles have materialised. Human impact is literal and the actions that proceed from now are crucial. Currently, our present and previous generations have contributed to awful and growing issues.

A prominent concern of our era is occupied by the critical controversy of climate change. Scientists are attempting to alert us that immediate measures against it need to be adopted to prevent catastrophic consequences. Recently, in April 2022, a frantic association of four NASA scientists united together to exert the importance of climate change.

Zachary O’Donnell is a seventeen-year-old Kamilaroi (Gamilaraay) person stemming from Coonabarabran, New South Wales. Zachary grew up in a small community called Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory, and he is currently residing in Adelaide (on Kaurna Country) to complete his studies, whilst running a successful art profile under the name Marayn Arts.

Finley ran along the rooftop, spiked bat held tightly in his hand. Taking a quick glance behind him, he saw two zombies clawing and racing towards him. He looked ahead and leapt to the next roof, turning swiftly, bat ready for the zombies.

Languages all over the world are dying, tearing down the cultures and traditions which are bound to them. Many languages, including countless Aboriginal languages, are in significant danger of totally vanishing soon, severing people’s connections to their history, culture and identity.

When you envision a more just and joyful world - what do you dare to dream of?

School is fast-paced, interactive and very collaborative, so it was a huge challenge to adjust to learning from home during the pandemic, especially because I had very limited internet coverage.

While for many January 26th is a day of family celebrations, beach cricket and barbecues, for the nearly 800,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians it can be a day of overwhelming sadness, frustration, and a reminder of the generational trauma experienced by First Nations people.
