With such a prolific director tackling one of the most famous books of all time, Frankenstein has a lot of expectations riding on it from both fans and casual viewers. Although there have been hundreds of adaptations of Shelley’s original story, many fans of the book feel that we still haven’t gotten a truly faithful version on the silver screen. So, has Guillermo del Toro finally done it?

The first film in the DCU, Superman, is now available to watch at home digitally, with a physical release slated for this week. The film draws inspiration from many elements of Superman’s 87-year history, from his countless comic appearances to the iconic 1978 film starring Christopher Reeve. One of its more overt influences is Superman’s divisive “new” logo, ripped straight from the pages of the 1996 comic miniseries Kingdom Come.

Tony Santorella’s debut novel Bored Gay Werewolf had me hooked from the title, obviously. As well as being a fan of queer horror and particularly queer monsters, last year I did my Honours thesis on werewolves in popular media and their relation to gender identity. I knew that this book would be able to scratch this niche itch of mine, and for the most part, it did.

This week the Pride Film Evening came to the Victa Cinema in Victor Harbour. The Pride Film Evening was a celebration and amplification of voices of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Overall, I would give “Murder Village: An Improvised Whodunnit” a five out of five stars for pretty much anyone looking for a fun night out and something they DEFINITELY wouldn’t have seen before (obviously, because it’s all improvised but also cause it’s a unique concept for a show).

Sunrise on the Reaping is Suzanne Collins’ second prequel to her beloved Hunger Games trilogy that started in 2008. The latest story follows Haymitch Abernathy, a major supporting character in the original books, and his experience as a participant in the 50^th Hunger Games, over two decades before Katniss Everdeen’s story.

Lost In Translation is a show filled with immaturity, absurdity and randomness in the best way possible. Taking scripts from well loved movies and putting them through an online translator multiple times results in a weird, wacky, and hilarious version of the film. I attended the Titanic session, which was full of comedically out of place modern references and hand fetishes.

Not your typical Adelaide Fringe experience, SGC Art Studio’s Creating Botanical Themed Pottery Art Plates, allows you to be the artist. During this workshop, participants create either one large or two small plates, customising them with their own botanical design.

As the year draws to a close, I thought it would be fun to look back on some of my personal favourite queer films of the year and what they meant to me and so many other people who got the chance to see them.

Causeway Film’s newest upcoming film Went Up the Hill first premiered at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and more recently had its Australian Premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival (AFF). Directed by Samuel Van Grinsven, Went Up the Hill is an original and intimate take on the traditional ghost story.
