Farewell Helen!
On behalf of all the Hub interns, we collectively would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the exiting Commissioner for Children and Young People, Helen Connolly. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be part of a program that values young voices and empowers us to contribute meaningfully to our communities. Your leadership and commitment to listening to young people have not only inspired us but also provided a platform where our ideas are genuinely valued and supported.
When asked what they would like to say to Helen as she exits the role, this is what some of our Interns wrote:
Edie: Even though I have played a very small role in your career, that has never showed. The way you give such empathy, belief and respect for all children and young people you connect with is something to be admired. The next commissioner definitely has some big boots to fill. I remember after only a few Hub meetings in the CCYP office, you welcomed me with a smile and “hey edie, how you going”. I was shocked that someone with such a position could remember me after such a short period. This demonstrates the genuine curiosity and connection Helen has showed for the lives of children and young people.
Mitch: Thank you for all you have done as the Commissioner for Children and Young People. While I only knew you for a short time, I can tell you are caring person, demonstrated by always making sure to wave goodbye even while you were on one of your many important zoom meetings. In particular, the trust you bestowed on us with the editorial direction of the Hub magazine did not go unnoticed. The opportunity to bring joy, talk about important issues, and hone my journalistic skills in a low pressure environment has helped nurture a confidence that I wouldn’t have otherwise had.
Megan: I met you four years ago at the very first SA SRC summit. Since then, you and your work has provided me not only with so many new opportunities and experiences but also with a welcoming, safe and supportive community. It was particularly over the past two years, as a Hub team member, that I have gotten to know you and the incredible work you have done. As a young person, who has been directly affected by your work, I will be forever grateful for everything you have been able to offer me.
Sophie: Though I have only met Helen a handful of times, her kindness and encouraging nature shined through every interaction we had. It's evident in everything she does that she truly cares about her work and the children and young people she does the work for.
Olivia: Over the past five years I’ve been involved with your office, I have been so grateful for the countless opportunities you have been provided me. Your work exemplifies how we should be involving young people in the decisions that directly impact them. Thank you for the tireless work and support you’ve given to the young people of South Australia over the last eight years and the standard you have set for future decision makers and leaders on how to best engage with young people.
Being involved in this internship has given us the chance to learn, grow, and develop skills that will stay with us well into the future. Thank you Helen for such an incredible opportunity.
With gratitude,
The Hub Interns 🌟
