Broken Waves - The Band At The 2025 SA SRC Summit!

Meet Broken Waves: The Band Bringing the Energy to the SA SRC Summit

The countdown is on for the SA SRC Summit in March, and one of the most exciting additions to this year’s event is the high-energy band set to close out the day: Broken Waves. Before they take the stage, we’re giving SA SRC students an inside look at the group, their journey, and what to expect when they bring the vibes to the summit.

Who is Broken Waves?

Broken Waves is a five-piece band made up of Ben (bass guitar and vocals), Declan (guitar), Will (guitar and band manager), Heath (drums), and the newest member, Daisy Davidson (keys and saxophone). With a passion for music that started back in high school, the band has grown and evolved over the years into something truly special.

While the name "Broken Waves" might sound like it has a deep and meaningful backstory, the truth is a little simpler. Inspired by the movie Breaking the Waves, the band liked the imagery and the play on words, and from there, the name stuck.

From Jamming in High School to the Big Stage

Ben, Declan, and Will first started jamming together in high school, playing for fun and gradually shaping their sound. “It didn’t start as good as it is now,” they admitted, but persistence and passion kept them going. Over time, their lineup solidified, and they became the band they are today.

For Broken Waves, music has always been a way to build friendships and stay connected. “It’s been a lifelong thing for as long as we can remember,” they shared. What started as a hobby turned into a serious musical pursuit, leading them to stages across South Australia.

A Sound That Makes You Dance

When it comes to their music, Broken Waves is all about energy. Though their sound has evolved over the years, they describe themselves as a mix of indie rock, funk, disco, and house—anything that gets people moving. “Whatever we can do to make people dance,” they said.

The band focuses heavily on original music but also throws in covers with their own unique spin. Their setlist for the SA SRC Summit will include a mix of their own songs and some well-known covers to keep the crowd hyped. “We’ll probably throw in some David Guetta,” they teased.

Performing at the SA SRC Summit

For Broken Waves, playing at the SA SRC Summit is more than just another gig. It’s an opportunity to perform in front of a new, younger audience and be part of something bigger. “I had a pretty difficult experience in high school,” one of the members shared. “Reading about the Summit and how it gives young people a voice is something I feel really passionate about. Even just playing the music and being part of it in a small way is exciting.”

As a band that started in high school themselves, Broken Waves sees a connection with the SA SRC students. “Music gave us agency and self-direction when we were younger,” they said. Now, they hope their music and journey can inspire others to pursue their own passions.

Influences and Inspiration

Broken Waves draws inspiration from a range of artists, with major influences including The 1975, Foals, and Glass Animals. Their music is full of energy, designed to create an unforgettable live experience. But beyond just making great music, they also aim to include meaningful messages in their lyrics.

“There’s a big focus on mental health in our music,” they shared. Their latest single, Do You Understand, touches on themes of toxic masculinity and self-reflection. “A lot of the songs we still play were written when we were teenagers. Even our newer songs often come from old journals. So there’s definitely a message in what we do.”

Breaking Into the Music Industry

The journey into the music industry isn’t an easy one, and Broken Waves is no stranger to the challenges that come with it. “There’s never been one big career-defining moment for us,” they admitted. “It’s been a slow process of sticking to our guns and trusting that there are people out there who want to hear what we’re doing.”

Their advice to young people looking to get into music? “Start now. You don’t have to know right away that this is what you want to do, but if you have even an inkling of passion, pursue it. Get involved, meet people, and take opportunities. You won’t know where you belong in the industry until you try different things.”

What to Expect at the SA SRC Summit

So, what can students expect from Broken Waves when they hit the stage at the SA SRC Summit? A high-energy, dance-filled performance with a mix of original music and familiar favourites. “We’re constantly evolving our setlist, so by the time the summit comes around, we’ll probably have some new stuff ready to go.”

And for those wanting to get familiar with the band before the big day, their top song recommendation is Do You Understand. “It’s the best song we’ve done so far,” they said proudly. If you like that one, The Divide is another must-listen.

Final Words for SA SRC Students

Broken Waves is more than just a band bringing the party—they bring music with meaning. Their songs explore themes relevant to young people, from mental health to personal growth. And at the SA SRC Summit, they’re not just playing a gig; they’re celebrating the voices and experiences of young South Australians.

So get ready, SA SRC students. Broken Waves is coming to bring the energy, the music, and an unforgettable experience. See you at the Summit!
