“We can ask the question” - VAR in Controversy Again
In a night of high controversy, both coaches were quick to ask questions of VAR.
“There was no issue with that [the first goal],” Carl Veart, Adelaide United’s head coach, said.
“I find it interesting when VAR can step in there, when the referee and linesman let it go, is that a clear and obvious foul,” Veart added.
“I don’t think there was any decision to be made, I’m not even sure what they were actually looking at,” Veart’s counterpart, Steve Corica, said.
Corica was also unhappy with the second goal, Yaya Dukuly pulled the shirt of the Auckland defender, Callan Elliot.
However, the goal was not ruled out, as referee, Alex King, believed there was not a significant impact.
“The other one, [the second United goal] I don’t agree with. I think Callan [Elliot] was in front of the boy, [Yaya Dukuly] there was no need for him to go down, no need for him to pull on his shirt,” Corica said.
“There’s always questions on us, because we are the new team in the league. We’ve shown that defensively we are really strong team, and we can score goals, we have quality players.
“But it’s too late now. It’s done and dusted are we have another game now on Sunday, we go straight to Sydney tomorrow so it’s more about focusing on the Wanderers.”
United also had issues with the referee, the goal was scored in the 99th minute, two minutes after the minimum of seven that was given at the end of the 90.
“They scored in the ninth extra minute, I don’t know where that came from,” Veart expressed.
“It’s disappointing, the boys are disappointed, it’s like a loss.
“It’s about delivery, [on the last goal] it was difficult to defend.
“But, it shouldn’t have got that far.”
With troubles with VAR both here and aboard, is there still a spot for it in the beautiful game?
