Kostecki wins Larry Perkins Trophy
Lap one at turn one on Sunday morning produced classic Supercars chaos, with at least 10 cars taken out.
Ryan Wood locked up and went across the track.
While trying to avoid the Supra, McCauley Jones hit Kai Allan, who in turn set the championship leader spinning.
Broc Feeney was the unlucky casualty, his car broken with heavy contact from many others around him.
Nearly half the grid was affected, with Wood, Jones, Allan, Feeney joined by Zach Bates, Cooper Murray, David Reynolds, Rylan Gray, Jackson Walls, and Andre Heimgartner all losing out in the massive accident.
At the front, it was another Brodie Kostecki domination as he cruised to a second Larry Perkins trophy.
“Dick Johnson, Larry Perkins and all those guys from back in that era really really paved the way for us,” said Kostecki.
“Racing was a lot different back then.
“They were building, and preparing their race cars and I've got a lot of knowledge of cars.
“It definitely means a lot to me to be able to get my hands on that trophy for a second time and I think it's just the history that's behind it is what's important to me.”
It was a choice move to get past Thomas Randle at the second last corner, forcing himself past.
Matthew Payne had been having a strong weekend, but a crash in Saturday night’s penultimate race dented his confidence.
On Sunday, a lock up saw him out of the race, his front tyre left on the road.
On the penultimate lap, at the penultimate corner, Kostecki completed his masterclass, moving past pole sitter Will Brown.
The Shell-V Power driver won the weekend, and leads the championship heading into New Zealand in a month’s time.
“It definitely helps with a bit of momentum going into New Zealand,” Kostecki said.
“It's so early in the year to even talk about championship like it sort of almost means nothing to a point.”
