Feeney Pole, Heimgartner’s problem
Qualifying for Friday afternoon’s race would set the tone for the rest of the weekend.
However, with a championship contender missing the top 10, and Heimgartner’s car stopping on track to end Q2, it was Broc Feeney who went fastest.
Mostert was the first championship contender to go fastest in qualifying, before the chaos ensued.
It was Brodie Kostecki who posted a 1:19:0075 for provisional pole in Q1. Andre Heimgartner was second.
Shockingly, Will Brown wasn’t able to secure his place inside the top 10, and therefore wasn’t able to participate in the second part of qualifying, as his qualifying woes continued.
Mostert’s car showed no signs of having hit the wall as he placed it sixth, while Feeney and Allen were separated by 0.01 of a second.
Kostecki went top to start the second part of qualifying, his 1:19:1919 slower than what he posted in Q1.
Waters put his car on pole, before Broc Feeney and Chaz Mostert outpaced him. Feeney would hang onto pole with his 1.18.9640, before Andre Heimgartner’s car started leaking oil in the final sector, leaving turn 14 in a dangerous start as everyone tried to complete their final runs.
Kostecki found that out the hard way when his car went into barriers after arriving at the final turn, while Waters also couldn’t get his car turned in, as Heimgartner’s issues had a major affect at the top of the field.
“I was on a flying lap and Andre's engine blew and put oil all over the track,” Waters exclusively told Hub Adelaide.
“I went through to try and finish my lap and there was oil everywhere.
“The good thing is we've been pretty pacey so far this weekend and hopefully we can convert in this race to a trophy or try and get a win.
“It's pretty crazy around here in the dry, let alone in the wet, with all the lines and stuff and the curbs when that gets water on them, it's super slippery.
“We've got to try and learn something this weekend if we can try and finish the year strongly for sure and obviously try and get some trophies this weekend but you know going in the offseason with a bit of positivity so we'll throw everything at it and see what we come up with.”
Team principal of Brad Jones Racing, Brad Jones said it was mixed bag of results in terms of qualifying.
“I thought qualifying it was a bit hit and miss for us really,” he said.
“Jaxon (Evans) and Bryce (Fullwood) were not 100% happy with their cars, Macka (Macauley Jones) got a curb strike on his last set of tires that put him out.
“Andre ended up P2 and then in the top 10.
“He was looking like he was going to be fourth or something and he blew an engine. We’ve got a fair bit of work to do now to turn it all around.
“I definitely think it'll be out there, but they got a bit of work to do.”
