Power’s Out as Pies Punch Back

It was a dismal night for Port that was headlined with a seven goal to one third quarter as Collingwood humiliated Port at the MCG on Saturday, 21.10.136 to 6.9.45.

Goals to Dan McStay, two to Brayden Maynard, and another to Brody Mihocek had the 34 point half-time margin at 56 points midway through the third.

This before the prodigal son, Nick Daicos, kicked a goal, and the famous Collingwood chant rose around the MCG again. With the margin out past 10 goals, the Pies had recovered from last weeks poor showing against the Giants.

However, the first quarter wasn’t much better for the Power. Aside from Lukosius opener inside the first minute, the rest of the quarter was all about Tim Membrey kicking three goals in his new colours.

The former Saint and his teammates ran riot, doing as they liked as they opened up a 21 point quarter time lead.

Dan Houston didn’t look out off place at his new team, as he collected 27 disposals in front of his new home fans. But it was more then that with Houston tonight, as he was able to set up attacking moves from half back, with clever ball movement.

He was assisted by his midfielders, namely Steele Sidebottom, Patrick Lipinski and Nick Daicos, while Tim Membrey ended up with four goals at the pointy end of the ground.

For Port Adelaide, Connor Rozee and Ollie Wines worked well together, having 69 disposals between them. Jason Horne-Francis and Travis Boak both ended up with possession counts over 20, but the rush of Collingwood pressure forced the Power to stop.

Collingwood’s ascendency was generated from the dominance they had at stoppage.

Nearly every time the ball went up, the Pies won the football from the middle and either got it forward, or on multiple occasions, goaled from a forward 50 stoppage.

But it wasn’t just from stoppage, Port were dismal when the Pies played fast. They went end to end, and with crisp ball movement from half back.

When Port had the ball Collingwood were ferocious in their tackling pressure, they didn’t allow Port a second of space. They tackled and chased, as confidence grew among the Magpies in the second, they went from 21 points at quarter time, to have the margin out past five goals at the half.

Then came the third quarter avalanche, as the Pies swooped to lead by 70 points at the final change.

Dan Houston had a chance at goal to start the last quarter against his old side when Lachie Shultz gave the ball off to the lurking half-back. Houston flushed the shot from outside 50, but it was ruled out as Schultz wasn’t in the right position when he gave the handball off.

The fourth quarter continued much the same as the previous three, Collingwood kicking five goals to one in the last.
