Fire and Brimstone: Melbourne’s New Found Hell

The Melbourne Football Club are in a world of pain. At 0-5, the Cranbourne based team must find something and quickly if they are to remain alive in 2025. The Dees can play football that is good enough, but it’s in fleeting moments.

“You can’t do much when you put out first quarters like that,” Max Gawn began post game. Referencing the horrendous effort the Demons put up in the first term of Saturday night’s game.

His coach Simon Goodwin, echoed much the same, “I thought we were lucky to be in it.”

“Our first half was average,” Goodwin continued.

Goodwin still believes that he is the right man for the Melbourne job, and says that he will look all his options;

“I feel incredibly confident, I feel well credentialled to do that [to see Melbourne through this time],” Goodwin said.

“We’ll have a look at selection. Let’s have a look at the tape, at the review, and then go from there,” Goodwin finished.

The Dees struggled to connect tonight going inside 50, and that showed in the final result.

“There’s some things we need work on with our method,” Goodwin said.

“We are not where we want to be right now. We are in a challenging spot,” Goodwin said.

“Our sprit is very good, but that can waver,” Gawn echoed his coaches’ thoughts.

“I’ve been in similar spots before, the only thing we can do is be a connected group. We are a connected group. We’re not playing the football we want,” the ruck continued.

“There’s maybe a bit of head dropping, I know me in particular it happened at different points today. It’s f*****g hard, footy, we are out there trying,” Gawn said, letting out some frustrations post match.

However the third quarter was a real positive for the Demons, and Gawn was quick to recognise that;

“We put in a third quarter that everyone was excited to see. We’re getting a lot of opportunities, we’ll keep going to work.”

His coach, however, had a far more pessimistic view;

“We did it for a quarter. That’s all I say.”

The two leaders also disagreed when it came to hunting results, Gawn saying that if start looking for wins that it can hurt you, while Goodwin was just waiting for the tide to turn.

“If you start chasing results, you start going backwards as well.” Gawn noted.

“It can turn very quickly, three quarters, one half, a quarter, a win,” Goodwin said.

Goodwin however, remains fully of confident in his group: “It’ll turn,” his final remark to the media before exiting his press conference on Saturday Night.
